Dog Stairs or a Ramp? What to Measure Before You Buy

By Kinstroll ·

Measure the furniture height and available floor space before deciding between stairs and a ramp. Then consider whether your dog can comfortably use the proposed route in both directions. A product that fits the room is not automatically suitable for the dog.

The American Kennel Club's home-accessibility guide describes pet stairs as an option for dogs that retain balance and agility but struggle with jumping, and ramps as an alternative when stairs are difficult. Individual suitability still needs assessment. Neither choice should be used to push a dog through uncomfortable movement.

Stairs and ramps: what to compare

  • Stairs: compare total height, width, footprint and the actual step shape. The number of steps alone does not tell you whether the top reaches the furniture.
  • Ramps: compare the manufacturer's height range, length, usable width, surface and stated capacity. A longer run at the same height makes the slope gentler but uses more floor space.
  • Both: check stability, the transition onto the furniture, room to approach and turn, and the return trip down.

Kinstroll's current range includes foam stairs, not a ramp. This guide does not claim that foam stairs are best for every dog or replace the ramp manufacturer's instructions.

Take three measurements

  1. Furniture height: measure from the floor to the top of the seat cushion or mattress.
  2. Available footprint: measure the usable floor length and width next to the furniture, leaving space to approach.
  3. Transition: compare the product's actual top height with the furniture. Any remaining gap still needs to be negotiated.

Kinstroll foam stair dimensions

The table reproduces the current Kinstroll foam stairs listing. Suggested furniture heights are approximate product guidance, not guarantees of suitability.

Style Size (L ร— W ร— H) Suggested furniture height
Gentle Slope โ€” 2 Steps 15.7 ร— 15.7 ร— 11.8 in
40 ร— 40 ร— 30 cm
Up to about 15.7 in (40 cm)
Gentle Slope โ€” 3 Steps 22.0 ร— 15.7 ร— 13.8 in
56 ร— 40 ร— 35 cm
Up to about 17.7 in (45 cm)
Gentle Slope โ€” 4 Steps 28.3 ร— 15.7 ร— 15.7 in
72 ร— 40 ร— 40 cm
Up to about 19.7 in (50 cm)
Classic Steps โ€” 3 Steps 15.7 ร— 13.4 ร— 11.8 in
40 ร— 34 ร— 30 cm
Low beds and sofas

Example: the Gentle Slope four-step option is listed as 15.7 in high. Against a 19.7 in seat, there is still approximately a 4 in transition. Do not mistake the suggested furniture height for the actual stair height. Check whether that remaining transition is appropriate before ordering.

What do 22D and 30D mean?

The listing uses Soft (22D) and Firm (30D) to distinguish foam options. These labels are not certified maximum dog weights. Kinstroll does not have a laboratory-tested weight limit for these stairs. A firmer option is not, by itself, proof that a particular heavier dog can safely use it.

If capacity or suitability is uncertain, contact Kinstroll before ordering and ask your veterinarian about the type of access aid your dog can use.

Allow the foam to expand before use

The stairs ship compressed. Let the foam regain its full shape before checking its final placement; the Soft (22D) listing allows about 24 hours. Do not use the stairs while they are still compressed or unstable.

Place them flush against the furniture on a dry, level floor. Check that the base stays in place rather than relying on the term โ€œnon-slipโ€ alone. Supervise both ascent and descent and do not force a hesitant dog to continue.

Care and the buying checklist

The cover is removable and washable. Follow its care label and let it dry completely before reinstalling it. Review the current return conditions, including conditions for compressed foam, before purchase.

  • Actual product height and the remaining transition checked.
  • Footprint, width and approach space checked.
  • Dog's ability to use the route assessed.
  • Any capacity question resolved before ordering.
  • Setup and supervision planned.
